I have had some success with retracting nipples by more or less ignoring
them. I work on helping the mother get a really good latch - like Diane W.'s
description of the baby "climbing the Matterhorn." Often at that point the
tendency to retract (caused by the baby's gums pressing on the areola) is
countered by the baby's suckling, and the milk flows. I sometimes stroke the
bottom of the baby's chin to encourage sucking immediately, in case the
nipple has become retracted during the process of latching on.
