Hi Barb and other Lactnetters
Barb (heres' a big hug - you're good, the family wants and needs you,
ignore the ignorance around you) brings my attention to an issue about the
way LCs are treated by other health professionals. Her story of the
cardiac nurse waiting in the hall for her, obviously to have a go at her,
reminds me of similar stories told to me by colleagues. Mostly the
scenario goes that the LC, who has visiting rights, is asked to 'step into
the office' where the door is closed and the chastisement commences -
usually along the lines of "you told Mrs X to do abc. We don't do that
here and where are your references for this?"
The physio (physical therapist), dietician, visiting obstetrician, etc, etc
doesn't get spoken to by nursing staff like this. How can an LC handle
this situation so that she/he is given the respect deserved and treated
accordingly? How did the other professions move on to become respected in
their own right? Did female doctors face this attitude back when they were
in a minority too?
