Dear All,

I posted a few days ago asking folk to give information about
guidelines/professional practice act in the various countries that require
health professionals to promote breastfeeding as part of their practice. The
replies I have had so far have come from Australia.
(thanks guys) Would really appreciate so more info from other parts of the
World.

I would really appreciate to hear from other countries both in the developed
and developing world. I am interested in the link between exclusive
breastfeeding rates and the duty to promote breastfeeding by midwives, peds,
nurses etc.

We are in the process of doing a study on breastfeeding at present and were
not able to acheive the intended sample size because of the low exclusive
breastfeeding rate. Lots of the mothers were giving solids from birth or
fluids or formula. When asked the reason why a fair percentage of them said
it was because they had been told to do so by healthworker.

The question arises is how our we educating and socializing our maternal and
child health workers? Would specific guidelines by practice associations or
registering bodies play a role in at least ensuring the correct
socialization to promote breastfeeding?

Kind Regards
