I was interested the post about about how to inform physicians
re: information that is contrary to what they have thought to be valid.

I read with interest the suggestion that the information "giver, " in
this case the LC, act as though the information re: amoxicillin vs
dicloxacillin" ie, is something new, to avoid making the person feel
ignorant etc.

I have to say that I have thought this one over, and fundamentally, I feel
that this is not my job. To present information as though it were new when
it is not in order to protect someone else's ego or lack of up to date
information is not something that I am interested in.

I go for polite and respectful and honest interchange. I am not advocating
for "in your face" rude approach, but neither am I up to the task of
presenting old information as new in a deferential and self depracating
manner. This, to me, is a dishonest approach on my part. It is presenting
information in a way that is not forthright. If I make it my job to be a
balm to the wound of the other party who does not know what he or she is
supposed to be educated about, I would feel that I am shielding that
professional from the truth about his or her own practice levels and
education re: specific issues.

I think that if diabetes were the issue here, as someone else mentioned,
there would be no excuse taken for out of date practice. Why is
non-evidence based practice allowed to continue with regard to
breastfeeding? It seems that the medical community has a responsibility to
make this their priority. For me, I'll continue to shoot straight (and
respectfully and politely but as accurately as I can) from the hip.
