I have a kind of off the wall question. I was doing an education session for
the interns and residents at my hospital and was asked a question about
alcohol and how long must a Mom 'pump and dump' if she had been drinking. My
advise was if Mom can feel the affects of the alcohol she shouldn't nurse. I
remember hearing somewhere that the alcohol evaporates out of the pumped milk
and it is safe to use then. They asked how long it took. Does anyone have a
clue about this? Or if it is even true. The group was very receptive and had
very good questions. I did a survey to see how many hours of education they
had received in their training. It ranged from 0 to 5 hours. Most was on
anatomy but more in this group felt they had received some training in
assessing adequate breastfeeding.
