I had a case of repeated mastitis 18 years ago with my son. I got an
infection when he was one month (the day we moved into our very own first
house! I was sick on the floor of an empty bedroom. My friend cared for my
son except for feedings, while the guys carried the household out from
around us to the truck!) I got it 3 more times in the next 6 weeks or so,
when I talked to my NP friend, who worked in my ob's office (who also did
homebirths on occasion) and she told me it was probably an organism that
wasn't being eradicated completely and kept reinfecting. It involved
different breasts, not always the same one. As I recall, she got me a
different antibiotic and after 10 day dose, kept me on low dose for total
time of 6 weeks. I didn't get another one after that. I have had throat
infections do the same thing. 6 weeks of low dose abx gets rid of them for
a long time.
