I heard such a great thing at our milk bank board meeting yesterday, and it
cheered me up so much I thought I'd share it. One of the neonatologists
(George Sharpe, who will, by the way, be speaking at Marsha Walker's conf.
in Sept. about out milk bank) said: "All NICU babies in Austin are
currently being fed human milk; either own mothers or donor milk." That's
every single baby in every single NICU in our city (3 level 3 nurseries).
Now that miracle took the committment of all the nurses, the
neonatologists, and the hospt. LCs who are working their tails off to get
the NICU moms pumping, etc. And this is not an over night success story,
but is the direct result of the work of all the researchers who patiently
accumulated the data and published it, and all the LLL Leaders who advocated
for breastfeeding, and all the informed parents who insisted their health
care providers work with them on this issue. There have been hours of work
forming coalitions, years of outreach, and concerted efforts to build
bridges instead of putting up walls. In my opinion, it just goes to show
what can happen with team work.
There is an old labor union slogan which is my mantra: Don't mourn (or
complain). Organize!
