I am having a disagreement with on of our Neonatologists. He will not give our NICU preterm infants breastmilk if the mother is taking Percocet stating that it will decrease motility of the gut. He orders ABM only until The mothers are off the Percocet. The infants in question are 33 week triplets ( weights 1.7, 1.98, and 1.4 Kg) and a singleton at 31 weeks ( now 32 weeks) weight 1.66 Kg. I asked him about the sIga needed to protect the gut, and I asked for any research he has pertaining to his concerns. He told me it was an observation of his and that as long as he is the attending this is the way it will be.
What I am looking for from all of you, esp physicians, is have you heard of this problem with premies and Percocet, which is the higher risk of nec, the Percocet or the ABM. Please e-mail me privately as well as to the list.
