Rich Schanler MD, who does superb research on BM for premies, measured
triglyceride (TG) levels in those premies who got hindmilk
(Valentine/Hurst/Schanler article). He saw no difference after two weeks. I
am not sure anyone has measured TG out farther than that, because it usually
only takes a week or two of hindmilk feeding to "jump start" the growth.
Neonatologists DO measure TG levels - in any baby on hyperalimentation (TPN),
usually once a week - too much fat can worsen respiratory problems.
