You know, Beth, some of my favorite videos to loan are tapes of ILCA
conference sessions. The sessions are professional talking to professional,
so it's clear there's no attempt to "win over the mother" or to downplay or
overplay. The mother or professional gets a window on a world that's
focusing on the information, pure and simple, not on "marketing" to her.

One of my favorites is Jim McKenna, 1994. At that stage, Jim was just
becoming "known", and had spoken mainly to hostile audiences. You can feel
the caution in him as he starts, and see him warm as he realizes he's
speaking to 800 instant groupies. And nothing in a mother-targeted video
could be more compelling than his comment about how the apnea spells in the
solitary sleeping babies really scared him, followed by his offhand remark
as he turns to his next topic, "I never saw that in any of the co-sleeping
babies".

Another favorite is Heather Harris, 1995, rebirthing - a solution for
breastfeeding attachment difficulties, with its delightful video-in-a-video
of baby Matt in the tub with his mother, latching on well, all on his own.

Over the years, Michael Woolridge, Marshall Klaus, Sandra Lang, Marianne
Neifert, and a host of others have spoken, and their tapes are wonderful...
and inexpensive. If ILCA is still able to provide them, they're a treasure
trove. Every year, I listen to the plenary sessions thinking, "Will this
one work to bring a slice of ILCA home?"
