The lactoferrin and lactoferricin in breastmilk have antibacterial and
antiviral qualities.  Some viruses whose activity has been inhibited in
vitro (not in humans, in lab dishes) by lactoferrin are: HIV, CMV, RSV, HSV,
some hepatitis viruses and rhinoviruses.
E.coli, streptococci and many other bugs are inhibited by lactoferrin and by
the lysozymes in milk.

So, breastmilk for pinkeye?  Try it, you'll like it!  It is now the first
choice of treatments for neonatal conjunctivitis in Norwegian maternity
wards.  If that doesn't clear up runny eyes, we try sterile saline solution
before culturing and treating with pharmaceuticals.
