Mmmmmm, isn't it nice to know that all over the world some things are just
the same?? My 2 and a half year old was born small for gestational age at
37 weeks, 2 kgs, after IUGR was discovered in the 30th week of pregnancy.
He did gain a kilo (2.2 lbs) a month for the first few months, always on
his own curve below the "normal " curves, and that pleased the HCP's .
However when his weight gain slowed down after the 5th or sixth month of
age, I could see the looks of the nurses....the suggestions started
coming..."He probably would eat more solids if you nursed less," or "try to
give him lots of fried foods, put butter and oil in the food," or "Give him
lots of couscous and fatty meat. I like fat children!" I even got looks of
disapproval when the nurse had to give him his vaccination in his thin
thigh- like couldn't I fatten him up so it would be easier to do it? Oh,
yes, let's not forget, at a year,"Oh, he nurses just for comfort, no? (In
Hebrew the word used comes from the root for the verb "to spoil") " The
fact that he was healthy, VERY active (still is in perpetual motion!),
developmentally on target, doing everything he was "supposed " to do, was
irrelevant.
Considering that I was already relatively knowledgable about bfdg, an RN, a
mother of five, and had already been thru the whole route of thinking that
every word said to me by any HCP is neccesarily based on up to date
accurate information and research, and finding out that more often than I
would like to think, the opposite is true- I just nodded my head and went
my merry way.
I shudder to think what a new inexperienced and perhaps uninformed mother
does in the same situation.
By the way, at 2 and a half he weighs approximately 12 kgs,(approx 26.5
lbs). Skinny, wiry, no fat that I can see, and thinner that all of his
siblings. Healthy, etc. So what?
Have a great weekend,
Jennie
