Teresa: I have had similar experiences regarding colostrum volume--also
with a nursing older child. I think that no matter how wonderful a pump is,
there is no pump as effective as a child who knows how to nurse. Indeed, an
experienced bf mom could probably pump a fairly impressive volume of
colostrum. My concern is that first time moms seem totally baffled by
breast pumps, pumping in general, and disenchanted when they discover only
dribbles in the bottom of the bottle. They tend to respond by "turning up
the pump to full blast" as one mom recently said. (I thought "full suck"
would have been more descriptive.) This same mom had such bad areola
swelling after this that she was putting straight ice cubes (uncovered) on
them.
Warmly,
