The tip-off to me in these types of reviews is when "breast feeding" or "breast-feeding", instead of "breastfeeding" is the terminology used. I have seen this before, and the quality of the articles seem to reflect one's position in, or not in, the "breastfeeding" community.
Dr. Nice: Just a little comment on this subject. Although I agree
that this sort of spelling may be a tip-off about the author's knowledge
of breastfeeding, it has also been my experience that some editors will
not budge on the spelling. I myself -- and I hope I can justifiably
consider myself "a part of the breastfeeding community" -- have written
a number of articles about breastfeeding, sent them in with our (the
breastfeeding advocacy comunity's) spelling and have had to content
myself with the older spelling (and sometimes both the separate *and*
the hyphenated terms in the same article) because I couldn't convince
the editor even if I stood on my head to use the more accepted
terminology.
Thanks for all you do for mothers and children. Regards, Alicia Dermer,
MD, IBCLC.
