I thought of another slant to the recent discussion about formula
supplementation.
Recently, I was asked to see a mother of a baby hospitalized with FTT.  This
baby gained fine until 1 month, then had no gain from 1 month to 2 months.
Baby did not look healthy or alert.  It turns out this mother just didn't
want to be nursing her baby every couple of hours like baby was wanting to,
so she gave water after/between nursings.  What a sad case.  For cases like
this, it would be possible to help the mother build her supply back up -- but
only if she is willing to nurse more often/pump/etc.  Not all mothers are
going to be motivated and willing to nurse exclusively to the extent that
baby wants/needs to -- and so formula supplementation (or "doing both"
breastfeeding and bottle feeding) for these babies would be a lifesaver.
Just thought I'd bring up this scenario.
