I think this is one of the hardest parts of my combined role as LC and CBE.
What I do is try to educate them as to the many options related to
epidurals. In other words "I know you want an epidural but...maybe if you
can wait a while, maybe if you can get a lighter epidural, maybe if you can
get a walking epidural......."
My goal is only to get them away from a mindset of "no pain at all" to
"maybe a little pain is OK if it will help me push my baby out, avoid
forceps, avoid an episiotomy....."
We are very fortunate here to have anesthetists who will work on a model
other than "all or nothing.......plumb numb or natural."
