Pat -- I was happy to hear that you and the other NP students in your class
are getting some good info on breastfeeding. Having recently completed my
program for Family Nurse Practitioner as well, I found that I was very
disappointed in the amount of information taught - virtually NONE!!! While
the textbook contained mostly up-to-date info, I wonder how many of the
students actually read it!! And many of these NP students were new grads,
going on for the Master's with little previous work experience. I really feel
that we still need to improve the programs in many nursing schools and
advanced practice programs. I was even turned down when I offered to teach a
class (for free!!) on breastfeeding to both the grad students and to the
undergrads. Maybe a survey of nursing schools and how comprehensive and
current their breastfeeding ed is, would be in order??? I wonder how I could
work this into a Dissertation topic?
