"One disappointment in 2000 was that the FDA did not act on Martek's
application for its DHA/ARA to be designated as "Generally Recognized As
Safe" (GRAS) for U.S. infant formula. I am convinced of the safety of
Martek's DHA/ARA, based on overwhelming evidence from the numerous
safety trials conducted by Martek and its licensees, and the fact that,
in our estimation, almost one million babies have now safely benefited
from Martek's DHA/ARA-supplemented formula around the world. Because of
this, I remain optimistic that the GRAS review will be satisfactorily
resolved in 2001, and DHA/ARA formula will become available in the U.S."

"Many people think of Martek as only a DHA/ARA infant formula supplement
company. I believe that they seriously undervalue the potential of the
Company's other products and technologies. Infant formula represents
only a small portion of the future market potential for DHA/ARA. A
recent study of DHA supplementation of mothers during breast-feeding
showed that psychomotor development was significantly enhanced in their
30-month-old babies. This result, when coupled with a mother's loss of
her own DHA to her child during pregnancy and lactation, is beginning to
point to the need for DHA supplementation during both pregnancy and
lactation. This new market may be twice the size of the formula
market."

"Martek’s blended DHA/ARA oils provide the closest match, with regard to
molecular form of these fatty acids, to human milk when added to infant
formula."
