There are two pictures of envaginated nipples in The Breastfeeding Atlas.
In one picture you see the nipple folded into itself, and the next torn
open by pumping. Because the skin adheres to itself, nursing or pumping
tends to tear it. Holding the nipples open to allow the tissue to heal and
to prevent retention of moisture down in the crevice is the key. These can
be awfully painful for the mom.
