We have purchased a set of these dolls. we have the newer
version that you have to change the diaper and feed. No keys.
Actually comes with two diapers that have wiring or something so
that the mechanism can tell if the diaper is changed. the baby
can be bottle fed or breastfed as one other Lactnetter said.
The breastfeeding patch is applied to the shirt and baby is "put
to the breast" to simulate feeding.
The nice part is they came in a variety of sexes and skin
tones. We have white, aboriginal, oriental, East Indian, black
as well as a "crack" baby and an FAS. The last two aren't
functioning dolls like the others but the crack baby comes with
an audio tape of the high pitched crying I believe. I think it
might shake too, not sure on that.
So far only our staff have used the babies. The boss turned
hers on while it was upside down and it went into distress mode
and she couldn't stop it from crying. Had to reset it back at
the office.
Another staff member took hers home to talk her husband into
having a baby and ended up talking herself out of having one for
now!
The third staff member took hers home and "tried to breastfeed"
but embarassed she admitted to "quitting" because it was too
hard to get the patch to work.
We haven't tried any on our teen population as yet. By the time
we see them they are already pregnant and we haven't quite
figured out how to use the babies for the pregnant teens to
teach childcare etc. We have had a few teen mums who have been
through the program and then gotten pregnant. The program
didn't make them less interested.
The babies do make nice conversation pieces for prenatal
breastfeeding classes and their heads tilt back nicely for
latching. I like to hold mine in a sling for parents to see. I
had fun taking two of them over to the local reservation by
ferry for a bf classes with some teens.
