Sorry about that blank message! (I won't comment on the blank mind behind
it.)
I agree with the idea of asking for the Ethics committee to discuss the
topic of formula marketing. We often have a hard time coming up with
OB-specific ethics rounds. You don't have to bring up just this contest.
Talk to your breastfeeding-friendly childbirth educators - they'll be able
to steer you to the ICEA and lamaze sites; both have taken a stand against
formula advertising in their own teaching materials, and I believe both have
position statements about marketing and materials. In fact, marketing is
hospital-wide: one of our docs brings us doughnuts and drug pens every New
Years Day. (Hey -- I know it's ridiculous, but he's an old family practice
doc and we think he's sweet. And yes, I know he's probably giving his
patients those $250 meds and the pens are driving up the price. And this is
the problem - we think it's sweet!)
A recent Journal of Perinatal Education (Lamaze) addressed marketing issues.
It's a topic whose time has come in other places besides lactation.
