I am one of those unfortunate people who resumed menstruation very quickly
after each baby - usually by 6 to 8 weeks. This was true even though I
co-slept and was tandem nursing with each baby after my first. However, I
was using sympto-thermal methods of natural family planning and found that
even though I was menstruating, I didn't ovulate for many months - 9 months
after first baby, 15 months after second baby, and more than a year (can't
remember the exact number of months any more!) for the last two.
I believe the early return of menses may have a genetic side, as my sister,
my mother and my grandmother all had the same experience. While I am on the
heavy side, my sister and my mother are not. I will be interested to see
what happens with my daughter, who is a vegan, when she has children.
