Winnie made good points about birth being traumatic, as did others....I like
to point out to parents to think about what the baby has been through for the
past 24-48 hours: labor, medications in labor, pushing (how long??),
suctioning, shots, blood work (esp for hypoglycemia protocols) and for boys,
circumcision, all serve to exhaust this little creature that had not a care
in the world two short days ago. I remind them that the things that make baby
feel like he is back in the womb (ie Kangaroo-ing, rocking, holding,
snuggling, etc) will help the baby make this transition less traumatic.....I
call it "insults" rather than trauma, however.
