As an LC in private practice in Dallas, I am working with a mom whose 11
month old is scheduled for upper and lower GI x-rays within the week. Doc
has told her that breastmilk is not a clear liquid but a cloudy liquid which
produces a stool and therefore, to prep him he must not nurse after 5pm until
after the 10:45 am next day procedure. She will give him a prep similar to
what adults get. Naturally, this is NOT going to be easy for this toddler.
While breastmilk is considered a clear liquid for surgery, I'm stumped about
this since the bowel needs to be clean for a good picture. How long does it
take breastmilk to go from mouth to rectum? Is this one of those few
exceptions where he really must be off breast for this time frame? The doc
is part of Children's Medical Center of Dallas. Could be please privately
e-mail me as well a post answer on the list - I'm swamped and cannot read
Lact-net regularly.
Thanks Judy Eastburn, BS, IBCLC
