Hello everyone
I'm behind on reading as I have been away from home to give a 'seminar' on
baby-friendliness, specifically on maintaining it once achieved. It ended
up being mostly about attitudes of staff, and the attendees were very
receptive, asked lots of questions and seemed truly interested in the
thoughts that were stirred up in the course of the four hours. I did the
same session twice in a row, two times four hours, as this place is a plane
trip away from me and the management wanted as many staff as possible to be
able to attend.
This is a public thank you to two lactnuts whose ideas helped me give a good
seminar.
I talked about Jean Cotterman's reverse pressure softening technique so they
got something palpable to use on the wards, in situations where shields
commonly crop up otherwise, and they were very interested in that.
I also sent around a bowl of wrapped chocolates as per Norma Ritter's post,
about 20 minutes after the ample food break, when every attendee had just
consumed two rolls with cheese/cold cuts and a cinnamon bun and coffee or
tea. We were talking about smoking and BF and they were kind of down, so I
just said 'Maybe you'd like this.' Everyone helped themselves and when all
(70 and 45 in the respective sessions) had done so I said, 'Hey, didn't you
just eat 20 minutes ago?' Startled pause, then smiles and then applause,
the only time all day they actually clapped, in fact. So that trick of
Norma's was a big hit here; they understood immediately what the message was
and I think they will all remember it!
I am in a stunningly beautiful area of western Norway, Alesund, and the
weather here is clear and still so the dramatic mountains and the sea are
overwhelming. They have a lot of bad weather here so I feel lucky in many
respects today.
cheers
Rachel Myr, relieved that this went well and now preparing to take the whole
show on tour around Norway
