Hi,
This came up for me on my Saturday morning rounds (I'm on call this weekend).
I have a mom with "bulbous" nipples with very tiny aerola (almost mushroom
like in appearance). She is day 2 post partum and had a C-section due to
fetal distress.
I need some suggestions on latch with this babe and mom. Especially how to
get a nipple farther in the mouth that is more wide than long. Baby is not
opening mouth very wide (looks like other post epidural babies I have seen).
Consequently he is tip feeding (actually sucking nipple rather than massaging
the sinuses) and mom is getting very sore.
TIA,
Pierrette Mimi Poinsett, MD FAAP
