The recent postings about possible misinformation given to a patient
regarding piercing the nipple to create an opening reminds me of something
I once heard. A physician described how a very young first time mother
didn't understand how the milk would come out of the breast. She hadn't
placed the baby to breast yet. When asked why -she said she was scared
about the pain she would feel when she would have to create a hole in her
own nipple so the milk could pour out. She was trying to get up enough
nerve to pierce her nipple so her baby could eat. No one told her to do it.
She just thought she had to do it.
