Sorry Kate - that wasn't at all clear in your post.

The evidence is it's not really important at all to the baby -
clearly, the mother is bound to be better off if she is
well-nourished, whether she is bf or not.
I think it's important to keep the distinction clear - too many
mothers are told their bf is not successful because their diet is
poor, while far more crucial aspects (technique, frequency) are
overlooked.
