Here in sunny Australia
RN = registered nurse, this may be a hospital based diploma (3 yrs, what I
did in the 80's) or a university based degree, or both. One of the reasons I
occasionally add BSN after the RN RM on my name is to specify that I am an
RN AND I have a university degree.
RM = Registered midwife. Here it means (at present) a one year hospital
based course AFTER basic nursing training, or a one year postgrad diploma
AFTER the nursing degree. All this will change hopefully in the next few
years with the introduction of the direct entry midwifery program.
In Perth at least, RNs don't work in obstetrics unless they are RMs or
training to become so.
