Well, it is a problem that has been created from the "nurse the first side
first" approach rather than "taking him off after 5 minutes and putting him
on the other side so each br gets equal stimulation" approach. What I get
from moms is, "how long do I have to breastfeed before I get to the "good"
milk?" ARGGGGGGGH! It's ALL good milk! But the cause isn't helped any by
books such as Baby(un)wise which states, "Before the milk is let down, your
baby will receive a milk substance stored in the ducts under the areola.
This foremilk, as it is called, is diluted and limited in nutritional value."
(page 69). Of course, this is the same book that states that...."Studies
show that in established lactation, a baby can empty the breasts in seven to
ten minutes per side." (page 76). Of course, ask Ezzo or Bucknam to show us
the studies, and Ezzo will reply (as he did in the Bradenton Herald
interview), that they are out there -- if you want them, you'll have to go
get them. He's much too busy for mundane things like that.... Not to
mention my all time favorite statement on page 100. "PDF (parent directed
feeding) is a new and major paradigm shift for the industry and not all
[lactation] consultants have a working understanding of routine
breast-feeding dynamics."
Is it any wonder that mothers don't trust us when they have a
lactation/parenting/child development/spiritual wizard out there to tell them
we are completely wrong?
Sigh, and sigh again.
