Wheeee!! The crime has been solved! Bananas it is. In all my years on
Lactnet I have never seen such a consensus. Almost everyone said that the
black strings were caused by bananas. How have I missed running into this
in my 30 years of working with breastfeeding mothers?

I called the parents today and they confirmed that just before the onset of
this mysterious output, baby had begun to long for a bit of banana that his
sister was eating. The banana hasn't distressed his GI tract so they will
continue to give him bits of it. I asked them if the banana was very ripe
or still yellow of skin and they said the latter. I suggested that a very
ripe one would probably be better digested, but they said that the daughter
wouldn't eat the ripe ones.

Thank you very much for your quick replies and for being, once again, so
very knowledgeable. The parents are appreciative of your help also.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, hoping to continue learning as long as I am breathing.
