In Dr. Hale's ninth edition of "Medications and Mothers Milk" the point
is made that it takes 1 to 3 hours to metabolize 1 ounce of alcohol. It is
suggested that mothers refrain from breastfeeding for 2 to 3 hours after
drinking alcohol. References are included specific to this recommendation
and also regarding the effects of alcohol consumption on the MER. Two of the
references are studies by Mannella. I remember hearing her speak at an ILCA
conference some years back and after that conference I stopped recommending
alcohol to "relax" the nursing mother. But the alcohol molecule is small and
passes readily in and back out of the milk, so after it is metabolized none
remains in the milk.
I am taking a clinical course in my Family Nurse Practitioner program.
One of the required books is a great paperback that has about 90 procedures
that an NP might need to do, with pictures, instruction, indications, etc. I
was thinking it would be great to have such a handy dandy reference for LC's.
It would have things like suck training, finger feeding, using the SNS,
teaching hand expression, etc. Does anything like this exist? Or could one
of the authors out there please write one!?
