Back to the basics... lots of skin-to-skin, lots of co-sleeping,
cuddling, unrestricted "non-nutritive" sucking (I put that in quotes
because I can't see how the breast can ever be really dry), long nights
together and help with other things during the day...
I tell mothers who have challenges that lead to supplementation that
they can "make up in duration what they lost in exclusivity". I mean the
emotional effects, of course... I also remind them that they probably
won't need to use formula once solids are started, so that it is,
really, a short period in the baby's life. A motivated mother can be
devastated by having to supplement, and not being able to get enough ebm
by any reasonable means to use for supplementation.
