Dear Heather, my promo for hand expression to moms is "you always have your
hands with you if you need to  get some milk out and hand expression is a
trick you learn like typing, takes some practice, but then you have a skill
that you can use whenever."  Non separation of mom and baby (my solution
for most hospital problems) means skin to skin, not crib near bed!
