Diane Weissinger suggests we could all benefit from a teaching
demonstration, where LCs work with "real moms" to describe and effectuate
latch.
It's been done! Well -- using other LCs as the moms. At the Jan. 2001
meeting of PRO-LC, one of the PA affiliates of ILCA, four IBCLCs
demonstrated how they teach latch in one of four positions (cradle,
cross-cradle, side-lying and football). And, we reviewed about four or five
videos showing latch and latch-teaching techniques.
Everyone learned something: a phrase to use, a technique to offer, a joke
to make a lesson memorable. Even those IBCLCs who can only be described as
our mentors were nodding and smiling as they gleaned a nugget for future
use. As someone so aptly put it recently -- we are all qualified to learn.
I highly recommend this as a meeting topic for local chapters of ILCA. We
can learn so much from one another.
