I would like to make a plea for temperance in the discussion of Dr. Sear's
website. Though I am as stymied as any of you as to the rationale for
allowing formula banners, I would also ask that the Sears not be
automatically thrown to the lions. As incomprehensible as this situation may
seem, remember also that Dr. Sears has been not only a pioneer, but also a
martyr more times than one for the cause of breastfeeding and attachment.
When he promoted a non-corporal style of training and discipline, he was
attacked as permissive. When he tried to address the issue of how to spank
with parents who were going to anyway, he was accused of betraying
attachment ideals. For his staunch support of breastfeeding and attached
parenting, he was attacked by Gary Ezzo, who did much damage to his
reputation among Christians.

IMO, Dr. Sears has taken many stones over the years that paved the way for
us who come after him. We have not walked in his shoes and cannot understand
every move. We do not have to endorse every action he takes, but I would
hope that we would at the very least extend respect to someone who has been
an elder in the field and attempt to enter into dialogue on this conflict
without a pre-trial lynching. Regardless of the outcome, we should not eat
our elders anymore than we should eat our young.
