This is not an excuse from the teens. Remember, teen mothers are not
listening much to their own mothers in the first place, but it is often their
mothers who stay home and ultimately raise the baby. So, now that the teen
mom needs to rely on her own mother for this, she will be influenced by the
pressures she is under. Amazingly, the very same women (mothers of the teens)
who proabably never bf their own babies are very aware that bf babies are
harder to separate from. They often do not want to care for bf babies, b/c
they know they are more attached and will be harder to care for and that the
mothers (of the babies) will be less willing to give up the mothering to
them. I have seen this phenomenon countless times in working with teens.
Also, moms may want to pump when they go to school, but have you ever
really looked at a hs girl's schedule. Most schools will not allow mothers to
miss class time to pump. We used to provide our teen moms with mini-electric
pumps if they had full day class loads so they could (ugh!) pump in the
bathroom. It was usually the only way they could do it at all.
