Just a word of support for feeding by cup in the case of baby who
temporarily can't meet own needs at the breast.
Remarkably often I have seen one cup feeding lead to an immediate and
dramatic change in baby's approach to the breast. You can almost see the
light bulb light up over their heads.
Advantages: easy clean-up (esp. compared to SNS); encourages lip and tongue
action which are compatible with BF; allows baby to decide when to stop.
Disadvantages: requires in-person teaching by experienced cup-feeder; leads
to more spilled milk so if EBM is scant, it may reduce the amount baby gets
very significantly.
I use cup feeding mainly in cases of babies who haven't figured out that it
is worthwhile to latch, immediately before offering the breast. I don't do
so often. Even after many days of fumbling with bottles, shields, poor BF,
a single cup feed can be the turning point.
