Sorry for another comment on the poem, but I had such a strong reaction to
it, I have to. I DO understand what this woman went through. With my first
child, I had NO support from ANYONE when I continued breastfeeding after 1
year. My husband & mother kept saying it was unnatural. My doctor said I
should have weaned at 6 months. My son and I really enjoyed our time
together breastfeeding and I became what I call a "Closet Nurser" the last
6 months. We would go in the back bedroom to nurse and when we heard someone
coming, we would stop. He knew that once they left, he would get to nurse
again, so he didn't fuss each time we stopped. At 20 months, I couldn't
handle the stress anymore and felt it was time to wean. I think that was the
most miserable time in my life. I was not empowered at the time to do what I
felt was right. I wish I had had friends like you guys, maybe I could have
continued with your support and caring. That was one of the reasons I
became an LC, to be there for the mom, even if it was just to have
someone to tell her she's doing the right thing and that she is doing a
great job. I always let them know that they are welcome to call me
anytime, even if it's just to talk. Someone the other day called me
"Mother of Mothers." That was the best compliment anyone could have given
me.
With my second child I was ready to nurse for an eternity! Unfortunately,
she was not interested after the first year. She has always wanted her way,
so there was no convincing her otherwise. Just wanted to present another
side to the story.
Julia in sunny, but cold, Eden, NC
