I'm fairly sure I read this on Lactnet and have also observed it to be
true, that these very sleepy, dehydrated babies don't seem to get nipple
confused if supplemented until they decide to wake up and nurse. We are
talking about extreme cases like the one mentioned by Dr Kate 12/4/00. In
practice I have seen so many babies "turn the corner", "wake up and smell
the roses", whatever you want to call it, after just even one decent
feeding of pumped colostrum or formula. It's like the light comes on and
aha! that's what I'm supposed to do. In these instances besides rule #1 -
feed the baby, we need to remember rule #2 - preserve the milk supply.
We've had some good posts lately on gentle hand expression. Save the baby
and save the breastfeeding are compatible goals! Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
