It seems though, that even more preferable than cereal is fruit and veggies.
In several years of going to three LLL groups, one of the biggest concerns
regarding solids is that "my baby won't eat the rice cereal". they seem to
spit it right out, but will happily pick up and eat peices of very soft
fruits and veggies.
I think that meat can be down the road a bit (after fruits and veggies - or
never if your family is veg or vegan), but cereal - even further seems
appropriate..
