I do not work in a NICU but know what is happening in the local, large
government hospitals because of the BFHI drive and hospitals seeking to be
awarded "Baby Friendly" status. Step number 9 of the WHO / UNICEF (1989)
statement "Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding" says "Give no artificial
teats or pacifiers to breastfeeding infants". The mothers here, too, are
very often not available to stay continuously with their babies. They are
admitted to the Kangaroo Mother Care wards for a period before the babies
are discharged, but in the meantime their babies are cup fed, in compliance
with Step 9. The ABM, or EBM if available, arrives from the milk kitchen in
bottles without any teats attached.
