Bovine colostrum is genetically engineered (most cases). Transgenic herds
(you know pharming not farming) in the US produce this substance. There are
herds in Wisconsin and Virginia. Transgenic technology involves "the
transfer of a genetically engineered segment of DNA (a DNA construct) into
the genetic material of another species which allows for the targeted
expression of important human therapeutic and nutritional supplements in the
milk of lactating female livestock." from PPL Therapeutics. Many of the
proteins in human milk are being cloned in this manner for use in the
pharmaceutical industry and yes, yes for infant formula. Infigen in DeForest
Wisconsin has one of the herds. Infigen collaborates with Pharming Holding
N.V. who collaborates with Numico. So yes they are going to try and produce
infant formula that is identical to breastmilk through genetic engineering.
I guess that is a worthy endeavor, if you believe that women don't want to
breastfeed.
