Maria Winschel tells of 'a professional here in town that thinks because
mother's are laboring NPO, with dextrose IV due to epidural and inductions..
hospital policy; that the babies of these mothers are born starving and need
formula'
This is indeed way out. It's the mothers who would be starving (i.e.
starting to burn their own body mass) if they were not getting IV calories,
which they are if they are on glucose or dextrose IVs.
Here in oddball Norway, women are generally 'allowed' to eat and drink at
their own discretion right through labor. I have never heard of a case of
aspiration. Starving women in labor is known to be harmful and should
cease. See the WHO Report, 'Care in normal birth: a practical guide' or
'Guide to Effective Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth' by Enkin, Keirse and
Chalmers for the evidence.
If the babies test ketotic or hypoglycemic, and I emphasize there is no
reason to test a healthy, normal weight-for-age, term baby for either one,
then you could argue starvation, if you had nothing better to occupy
yourself with, I mean.
BTW, the treatment for that would be breastmilk, served at the breastaurant.
Just out of curiosity, is this person's profession by any chance
'salesperson for ABM'? Yes or no answer only!
