We are having a plague of breast abscesses here in Cape Town, South Africa,
and we are wondering if this is just a local, coindidental occurrence or if
this type of infectious upsurge is, or has been, common in other parts of
the world? We have been in private practice as IBCLC's for 10 years and in
all that time have not come
across one breast abscess. Since July this year, we have seen 5 moms with
breast abscesses, all at various stages of lactation ranging from one week
to 10 months. Most of the surgeons who do the incision and drainage are not
supportive of continued breastfeeding after surgery and for the first time
moms this is such an awful introduction into the supposed joys of
breastfeeding. One of us (Rosemary) is currently battling with a tooth
abscess and we are really wondering if there could be something in the air
in our beautiful, but very dry (we are on water restrictions) part of the
world ???
