I have been no mail for a time while running a TOT(Trainer of Trainers in
Lactation Management ) course in Oudtshoorn, which is ostrich country, north
of Cape Town. Jean Ridler and I facilitated the course together and we were
there when the exam results came out. Great excitement. And congratulations
to all the other successful candidates.
Now we are back at work and I am reading with great interest the debate on
the use of Fenugreek. Back in September there were many posts on this
subject and as a result of that, I have been happy to offer this as an
option to those mothers who have a compromised milk supply. I am currently
working with a Mom, with a four week old baby, who has a severe milk supply
problem. She moved to our part of the country two weeks ago. New house, new
location, new job for dh and new baby. Only one breast developed during
pregnancy. She said baby did well on colostrum but when asked about "sucking
and swallowing" could not recall it ever happening. The mom added 100ml of
ABM after every feed from very early on. Then baby began rejecting the
breast and she resorted to almost exclusively bottle feeding. I first saw
this mom two days ago when we initiated ABM at the breast via a tube and the
baby did well. This mom sells herbal products from home and chose to go the
Fenugreek route after being given all the other options. She says that she
has already noticed an increase in her milk supply. I am in a quandry as to
whether to now tell her to stop the Fenugreek. Can all the previous positive
input on Fenugreek be confirmed, in the light of Ruth Lawrence's
information? If I have missed any of this info while I was away I apologize,
but it does appear to now be a resurgeance of looking at Fenugreek.
