I am glad, Cathy, that you pointed out the smallness of the study and the
words "strong association." I think my point really is (although I did not
mention this in my post) that the beneficial aspects of breastfeeding are so
very easily overlooked or understated and sometimes quite purposefully
overlooked and understated(as in the SIDS info in the gift bags). In the
meantime we, at least in the US, have all these patents using human milk
components to prevent diseases and to treat diseases.
Whether or not a patent and its idea is based on fact/truth, I do not know.
But there are people, who spend enormous amounts of money to get these ideas
patented, in order to make money. Helicobacter pylori is just another
disease that some inventors (and I use that word only because that what the
patent office calls it) believe can be treated by human lactoferrin. The
irony is that enormous efforts are made to create profit from something women
can produce freely. So who does the consumer believe? Who has the money to
market themselves and their industry? The irony and tragedy is we are being
sold back the very thing we, women produce freely and lovingly to our
infants.

Here's another patent and I included the references because the Britain study
is not the only study that shows a "strong association" between this bacteria
and SIDS. Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC

Prevention of sudden infant death

Abstract
A method for identification of an infant being particularly susceptible to
sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) comprises the determination of an
Helicobacter pylori infection in the infant's mother, particularly by
detection of antibodies to H. pylori of the IgG type, in a blood sample drawn
from the infant's mother or by determination of carbon dioxide formed from
urea in the air exhaled from the infant's mother upon oral administration of
a challenge dose of urea. Also disclosed is the use of an antibiotic
effective against H. pylori for the manufacture of a medicament for
administration to mothers and other persons infected by H. pylori and coming
into close bodily contact with infants below two years of age, and a method
of prevention of SIDS by administration of that antibiotic.
