<< The question arose about a mom who was having bleeding at 7-8 weeks pp
after not having bled for more than 3 weeks. She asked if this could be a
period or pp bleeding coming back. >>
This was explained to me by an OB as bleeding from the loss of the eschar.
Here's my rather simplistic explanation of what he told me:
The placenta leaves a wound in the uterus where it attached. The uterus
clamps down to control the bleeding and lochia continues the scab stays
normally soft.
Some women however form dry scabs. When the scab dislodges from the uterine
wall usually at 6 to 7 weeks post partum women experience bleeding that can
be mistaken for a period.
My understanding is that 6 to 7 weeks post partum is also a common time frame
for post partum hemorrhage for this reason.
Maybe one of our doctors can explain it better then I have?
