I think giving parents some broad guidelines is helpful as long as we are clear
that there are no absolutes. I also feel strongly about documentation of
swallowing. It helps parents know what things to watch for and reassures me.
When I ask the floor nurses if they heard swallowing most haven't hung around
long enough to know, and thus none of their documentation of the feeding is worth
much. And at least a couple of swallows would tell all and sundry that there was
an effective nursing going on.
