Lisa,
I hope this website will be useful to you.
http://nurturing.ca/tandemnurse.htm

This is my tandem nursing story. I hope it helps.

My first son, William, was 23 months when Scott delivered at 41 weeks.
William nursed 3-5 times or more towards the end of my pregnancy. I actually
enjoyed the times I was able to sit still with him. He was/is a very active
boy.

Both boys were 9 pounds even. I gained plenty of weight both pregnancies. By
four months both boys were 20 pounds. William gained weight quickly after
Scott was born. He went from about 30 pounds to 40 pounds in 3 months.
Nobody was deprived of any nutrition.

William nursed to sleep the night I went into labor with Scott. I thought I
might be having early contractions while he was nursing, but it wasn't until
2-3 hours later I knew it was active labor. It was a relatively easy
delivery with good support from a doula. The first 24 hours pp neither boy
nursed much. William was at home. Scott just seemed to enjoy being held.
BUT, when I went home in 24 hours both boys nursed constantly. I didn't pay
attention to who went first. They were both content on and both cried off. I
didn't want to hear the crying so they both nursed. My milk came in about 48
hours. Some of you have heard this before. Sorry if I have repeated myself.
Both of my boys continue to nurse 3-5 times or more daily.

I have done many searches on tandem nurses. The website I found has been the
most thorough. There is not much written on what happens beyond 3-4 months.
From my own research and personal experience I don't see why a mother should
routinely be told not to tandem nurse.
